I’m posting this video quite simply out of respect to anyone who is camping in this weather (rain, rain and more rain)
Ok – Consider this blog post to be a ‘public service’ post.
So on Sunday a couple of us went on a tour of the churches around Exeter, looking for suitable wedding venues. We saw some stunning churches, but were our friends allowed to get married there?
(As a side note, after meeting the people involved in some of the churches, would our friends want to get married there?)
If you are wanting to get married by the good old C of E, but are wondering how on earth it all works, you may find the Your Church Wedding site helpful. The most useful part by far is the section that explains what church you can get married in:
You can marry in a CofE church if you can show:-
That one of you:
- has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
- was baptised in the parish concerned or
- was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
- has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:
- has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
- has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or
That one of your parents or grandparents:
- was married in the parish
In all cases involving church services – i.e. going to normal church services, baptism, confirmation or marriage – this applies only to Church of England services. Even if you cannot demonstrate any of the above connections, we want to help you explore whether it may still be possible for you to marry in your special church.
Talk to the Vicar there well in advance to discuss the options open to you.
Like a plot from a bad comedy;
A number of strippers in Warsaw, Ohio have protested outside a local church which regularly pickets them.
Tommy George, who runs the Foxhole club, launched the protest against the actions of Pastor Bill Dunfee of the New Beginnings Ministries church located 7 miles away, The Columbus Dispatchreports.
Dunfee and members of his ministry have picketed the Foxhole every weekend for the last four years, waiting in the car park with signs, horns and video cameras. The church later posts video clips of patrons’ number plates online.
Dunfee said: “Tom George is a parasite, a man without judgement. The word of Jesus Christ says you cannot share territory with the devil.”
George has responded in recent weeks by taking strippers armed with water pistols and dressed in see-through shorts along to the church.

We did the “The Peace” at Church… and I couldn’t help thinking about this cartoon from Dave Walker;
In fact I actually used this cartoon to break the ice with a bunch of people that we didn’t know… well it seemed that we were surrounded by people that we didn’t know – so the above cartoon got well advertised…
As part of this panic-fuelled ice breaking, I was asked where I would I sit on the above cartoon.
Personally I would draw some dude wearing a hoodie, shaking peoples hands, eyeing the exit less and less as time goes on. With that in mind, why is “The Peace” ended just as I get comfortable with this madness?
What would a drawing of you during “The Peace” look like?
You wake up. You go to work. Go Home. Hang around. Go to sleep. Throw in going to the Pub, and you have most peoples lives.
Thats fine for a while, but if you’re anything like me, it gets to the point where that gets you down. Personally I found myself feeling unfulfilled with what I was doing, and scrabbling around for a purpose in life. I do occasionally still feel that way, if you’re anything like that, here’s a few things I’m finding that helps.
1. Learning skills you want to learn. Dont learn something that might help your career.
I need to be motivated to learn something new, I also need to to be excited by it or I’m not going to bother. I tried going over the cisco CCNA course… to be honest it was the best way to go to sleep. So I quit that, and did a course in something I actually want to do (Adobe Dreamweaver / Flash).
2. Getting more involved.
I got more involved with the youth club at church, when the guy who was leading it admitted to struggling with the commitment needed. I find that as well as focusing my time, it gives me an identity away from the world of 9 – 5 .
For those people who haven’t heard of her, Jennifer Knapp was a semi famous Christian singer back in the late 90s. I say semi famous because… well you’d have to have known about Christian music to have heard of her. (It may have been different in America).
I’m starting to see her name pop up again on Twitter and various RSS feeds. Not because her first album in nearly ten years is any good but because she has come out as being gay… oh… and she has a new album as well.
Cross Rhythms has an interesting article called Jennifer Knapp’s sexuality causes controversy in US Christian retail – it asks stores in America if they are stocking her new album… and asks why not. The response mostly seems to be “no – no one has heard of her”. Where stores have taken her album of the shelves, the sentiment seems to be “Thank God for Grace”.
I cant help but wonder if the Christian Press has made a bigger deal out of Jennifer Knapp being a lesbian then is needed, and in the process giving her a bag full of free publicity.
While we’re on the topic, if you’ve not heard the album you should get yourself over to the Jennifer Knapp website. Here you can listen to her new album for free, and find out that its actually pretty good!
Lets talk about the music.
(In case you’re wondering, this is an updated blog post from an old blog)
