Alright. So it seems that Liam Neeson has come out and said:
‘Aslan symbolises a Christ-like figure but he also symbolises for me Mohammed, Buddha and all the great spiritual leaders and prophets over the centuries.
‘That’s who Aslan stands for as well as a mentor figure for kids – that’s what he means for me.’
According to Digital Spy:
… Lewis’s former secretary and trustee of his estate Walter Hooper blasted Neeson for the comments, stating: “It is nothing whatever to do with Islam. Lewis would have simply denied that. He wrote that the ‘whole Narnian story is about Christ’. Lewis could not have been clearer.”
He continued: “I don’t know Liam Neeson or what he is thinking about… but it was not Lewis’s intention.”
Former editor of The Catholic Herald William Oddie also criticised Neeson for the remarks, calling them “a betrayal” and “shameful distortion” of Lewis’s novels.
“Aslan is clearly established from the very beginning of the whole cannon as being a Christ figure,” he said. “I can’t believe that Liam Neeson is so stupid as not to know.”
The poor guy has his own opinion about Aslan, and because its not the typical Christian answer people are having a go? One thing I could never quite understand was that people seem to have a pop at Harry Potter, because it features magic, monsters, witches, and so on and so forth… while Narnia is about God.
Maybe we stop assuming people know what the big church stuff is all about?
Daily Mail (Sorry)
Welcome to the new look Church Sofa website. We have taken the redesign as a chance to include a few toys. One of which is a flickr account… which doesn’t seem to be playing with our slide show – which is meant to be on the left hand side.
Like everyone else, we now have a Facebook page. If you like us and want to receive updates via Facebook, please feel free to click on “Like” on the left hand side of this screen. We’ll probably update it with random bits and pieces as well at somepoint.
Obviously if you’ve read this via Facebook, then I’m sorry for what’s such a self defeating post.
It is all a bit of a work in progress at the moment, so sorry if anything seems messy.
If something looks actually broken by the way – Please give us a shout!
Right. After last weeks attack of the downer. Heres this weeks roundup:
In the Blogging world, Sara Batts looks how she see’s herself verses how people see her in church, while in the week that England drop out of a world cup before it even begins Jon Butler looks at sports fans in the Bible. On a Christmas theme; Richard Littledale asks preachers if they focus on both joy and suffering at Christmas time, looking at suffering, Bishop Nick Bains asks if Christians are suffering from a persecution complex?
And lastly… A brother asks “Wheres Molly?”
A little bit of poetry, with thanks to @richardlittleda who suggested reading this while I was pondering the relationship between hating going to Church, but loving being there…
Sorrow and Joy
By Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Sorrow and Joy:
startled senses striking suddenly on our
seem, at the first approach, all but impossible
of just distinction one from the other:
even as frost and heat at the first keen contact
burn us alike
Joy and Sorrow,
hurled from the height of heaven in meteor fashion,
flash in an arc of shining menace o’er us.
Those they touch are left
stricken amid the fragments
of their colourless, usual lives.

I admit it.
Thats me in that rather dodgy dark photo – Its the best I could find online.
Why do I have a photo of myself on the site? Well its because I’m looking totally ridiculus cool in my new beard that I grew as part of ‘Movember’, a campaign designed to help raise awareness of, and funds for the fight against Prostrate cancer.
It seems that the following status is starting to do its rounds on Facebook:
A15 YEAR OLD SCHOOL GIRL HAS BEEN ARRESTED AFTER BEING FILMED BURNING THE KORAN? CATHERINE HESELTINE,CEO OF THE MUSLIM PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE UK, SAID “BURNING THE KORAN WAS OFFENSIVE TO FOLLOWERS”! BUT IT IS OK FOR MUSLIMS TO BURN THE POPPIES AND HOLD UP BANNERS SAYING …”KILL …”BRITISH SOLDIERS”… HOW IS THIS IS RIGHT? I WONDER… HOW MANY OF YOU WILL HAVE THE BALLS TO POST THIS AS YOUR STATUS?
Its worth delving into this a little bit. Note how people aren’t being encouraged to say why the girl was arrested. Just a little digging shows that the girl was arrested for inciting religious hatred. I’m sure that covers burning Holy Books.
Burning a Poppy while offensive to many, it is not racist and not considered illegal.
Lets chill a moment people, and think about things before we react and encourage others to react as well.
